Sofia University Hosts Over 130 Participants for BriGRETE Ethics Workshops


In June and July 2026, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” hosted a series of research ethics workshops and training sessions within the Erasmus+ project Bridging the Gap: Research Ethics Training and Education (BriGRETE).


The workshops brought together more than 130 doctoral students, early-career researchers and members of the academic community from different fields of study. The events focused on research ethics, scientific integrity, responsible research practices, the protection of research participants, and ethical challenges related to the use of artificial intelligence in academic and publishing activities.


The workshops took place on 13 June 2026 as part of the National Doctoral School for Open Science, on 18 June 2026 at the Faculty of Biology of Sofia University, and on 24 June and 2 July 2026 at the Rectorate of Sofia University.


The programme addressed key topics such as research integrity, research data management and sharing, protection of personal data, ethical review procedures, the role of institutional ethics committees, ethical principles concerning the use of animals in research, and current journal policies on the use of generative AI in scholarly publishing.


The workshops were delivered by lecturers and researchers from several faculties of Sofia University, reflecting the interdisciplinary relevance of research ethics:


  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Valentina Kaneva, Faculty of Philosophy, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”;

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Temenuzhka Zafirova-Malcheva, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”;

  • Prof. Dr. Rumyana Dimitrova-Hristidi, Faculty of History, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”;

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Veselina Moskova-Dumanova, Faculty of Biology, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”;

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bistra Mizova, Faculty of Education, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.


The sessions combined presentations, practical case studies and discussions, giving participants an opportunity to reflect on real ethical challenges in the planning, implementation, review and publication of research.

The workshop series contributed to BriGRETE’s efforts to strengthen research ethics education and promote responsible, transparent and ethically grounded research practices across academic communities.
