CHAllenges and innovative chaNGes in research Ethics Reviews (CHANGER) is a three-year Coordination and Support Action (CSA) project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon WIDERA programme aiming to promote changes in research ethics reviews by strengthening the capacities of researchers to incorporate ethical judgements in the project design and implementation, and by supporting capacity building of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) to address new challenges posed by new technologies and new research practices.
FAITH (Facing Academic Integrity Threats) is an Erasmus+ project launched in 2021 to promote academic integrity in higher education by establishing minimum standards, preventing cheating, and supporting those affected by academic misconduct. Responding to challenges intensified by digital and remote learning, FAITH develops benchmarks, evidence-based guidelines, training materials, and an interactive portal to foster integrity among students, educators, and staff. Through international collaboration among European universities, it aims to strengthen policies, provide preventive education, and build a supportive network that advances ethical and sustainable academic practices.
DATAETHICS is a transnational initiative launched by the Eurolife Consortium to update the ethical and conceptual frameworks surrounding the collection and use of Biomedical Big Data (BBD). Co-funded by the German Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, the European Commission, and the Franco-German University, the project earned a 98/100 evaluation score and the European Commission’s “Good Practice” label for excellence and impact. By fostering interdisciplinary and industry collaboration, DATAETHICS promotes a shared European vision on BBD ethics and governance. Its online training package includes four comprehensive courses addressing ethical, legal, and societal aspects of BBD, combining text, audio, webinars, discussions, and case studies to reflect current technological and cultural developments.
INTEGRITY is an Erasmus+ project launched in 2019 and led by Utrecht University, bringing together 11 European partners from nine countries to promote Responsible Research Conduct (RCR). Aiming to address the limitations of traditional research ethics education, it equips students with the skills to navigate complex ethical challenges through evidence-based, engaging, and capacity-building learning. The project develops analyses of student needs and current teaching practices to design tailored curricula across disciplines and study levels, emphasizing Transparency, Honesty, and Responsibility as core values.
irecs (Improving Research Ethics Expertise and Competencies to Ensure Reliability and Trust in Science) is an EU-funded project that strengthens research ethics expertise and promotes ethical standards to enhance trust in science. Responding to challenges such as emerging technologies, international collaboration, and the lack of standardisation across Europe, irecs develops interactive, sustainable training programmes to improve understanding and practice of research ethics. Building on initiatives like ENERI and The Embassy of Good Science, the project unites ethics practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders into a shared European community. Focusing on AI in healthcare, gene editing, biobanking, and extended reality, irecs has already trained over 800 researchers and ethics committee members to better address ethical issues in innovative research contexts.
PREPARED (Pro-active Pandemic Crisis Ethics and Integrity Framework) is a Horizon Europe-funded initiative that brings together an international network of research funders, academics, policymakers, publishers and civil society actors to address the ethics and integrity challenges of conducting rapid research in global crises. Its main aim is to develop a values-based, operational framework for ethical and reliable research in emergency settings without compromising speed, participant protection or public trust. The project offers “how-to” guidelines for research ethics committees adapting to crises, training materials and a case-study app to navigate ethical dilemmas, thereby strengthening preparedness for future emergencies.
ROSiE (Responsible Open Science in Europe) is a Horizon 2020-funded project coordinated by the University of Oslo which ran from March 2021 to February 2024 and received over €2.49 million in EU funding. Its mission is to explore, engage and guide the research community and stakeholders in embedding ethics and research integrity into open science and citizen science practices. The project identifies new ethical, social and legal challenges brought by open science, develops practical tools and guidelines (including a Knowledge Hub and discipline-specific training materials) for responsible practice, and fosters a community of practice across Europe.
ENERI (European Network for Research Ethics and Integrity) is a “network of networks” that unites researchers and stakeholders in the fields of Research Ethics (RE) and Research Integrity (RI). Launched in 2016 as a three-year Horizon 2020 project, ENERI continues to thrive beyond its official end in 2019, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity building within the RE and RI community. Its e-Community serves as a lasting platform offering practical tools such as the RI Handbook, RE&RI Manual, and Decision Tree, along with online training through the ENERI Classroom. In partnership with other EU-funded initiatives, ENERI remains active in enhancing ethical standards and promoting responsible research practices across Europe.
